Summary
Child's gown - Part of a child's petticoat and gown made from white cotton. It has a wide neckline, is waisted and has a wide stomacher at the front decorated with 5 vertical rows of whitework insertion with a design of shells alternated with rows of feather stitch. The robings are of light cotton and extend over the shoulders and along the back neck. The bodice has a slight fullness. There are long sleeves with a fullness at the head and are gathered lightly into a cuff made of 3 rows of narrow torchon lace stitched together. The frill matches the robbings around the armhole. There is a narrow waistband feather stitched at the front. The very long skirt is organ pleated onto the waistband. The front and hem are decorated with heavy large scale whitework featuring flowers, wheatears and moon shaped leaves. It is handstitched. The neck edge is trimmed with machine made Valenciennes lace. There are drawstring tapes at the neck and waist at the back opening. The petticoat has a cotton twill bodice and plain cotton skirt. It is sleeveless with a full skirt organ pleated to the bodice and 6 tucks above a deeply scalloped hem embroidered to match the gown. There is narrow torchon lace trim around the bodice and draw tapes at neck and waist with linen covered metal button and concealed button hole. it comes from Mrs Maxwell. (child)
