Summary
Hat - Made from whole straw twisted around a central core. It is narrow and overlapped closely to make a thick fabric (italian straw?). The top surface is covered with a thick fawn paint and varnish. The hat is lined with printed cotton. There are 7 wooden plates stitched beneath the brim to stiffen and add weight to the straw. The crown is edged with a narrow band of matching decorative plait. There are silk ribbon ties (later addition). (female)
