Summary
Surcoat (jinbaori), worn by Japanese aristocrats and samurai warriors over armour, eighteenth or nineteenth century, in red wool, decorated down the centre of the back with a vegetable motif, a jewel motif and a crossed rhino horn and deer antler motif in white, the red collar decorated with gold thread, the white shoulder tabs decorated with gold embroidery, the lapels held back by yellow couched braid, with tabs connecting the lapels tied by leather thongs in gold silk brocade lined with silver silk damask, with a frill at the armholes made up of yellow silk crepe, white silk taffeta and flame crepe, a pleated silver gilt braid at the hem and edge of the facing, lined throughout with grey silk damask with a flying crane motif and with an interlining of thick flexible paper.
