Summary
Mourning dress - Part of a woman's silk velvet mourning dress with sleeves dating from 1840-1845. Fabric - Black silk velvet. Yellow and cream selvedge. Lining - Bodice and sleeves lined with white linen. Skirt fully lined with brown muslin. Decorative bands faced with brown cotton net. Cut - Natural waistline with deep central point. 'V' neck and sloped shoulders. Bodice front is cut on the bias with the centre seam. The point is detached and overlaps the skirt. 3 darts either side of the centre seam. Centre and side seams are boned. The neckline is echoed in v shaped decoration of 3 applied bands of self-fabric held in place centre-front with long piped band. Centre back opening extends into skirt seam. Curved seam from armhole to waist. Short sleeves, the bottom edge decorated with 3 smooth frills of self-fabric, with double points on outside. Full skirt, knife pleated towwards centre-front. Organ pleated at back. Separate sleeves, full at top, narrowing towards cuff. Piped edges. Skirt and lining made up as one. Trimmings - Narrow frill of blonde at neck. Sleeve frills edges narrow black Point de Paris (six point) lace. Fastenings - 10 small painted hooks (1 missing) and buttonhole loops centre-back, 3 on each cuff. 2 pairs large painted hooks and eyes on waistband. (Cross Ref. H). (female)
