Summary
Frock coat - Made of silk brocade. Subdued all over floral design in cream on creamblack mottled background, giving a silvery appearance. Fronts and skirts lined with stiff steel blue silk twill (see also SNO.TC.1050), back lined with matching glazed linen. Cut edge-to edge with front line curving away. Seamed at mid-line. Narrow pointed cape. Low, narrow pockets with curved opening and deep scalloped flap. Wide back, seamed at waist. Low vents, the centre a tackover, the side vents triple-pleated, held at intervals. Shaped sleeves with narrow, close, round cuffs. The body of the coat is pieced neatly. Fasted with large matching deathshead buttons. 15 from neck to mid-line. 3 on each cuff with false buttonholes. 3 on each pocket flap, the outer buttonholes only cut. Hip buttons and 2 on each vent. Long slanting buttonholes front. 6 cut at waist. 3 small bent steel wire hooks and eyes from neck to chest. Line drawing with inventory card. (male) Wade reference number 18 'Gold brocaded silk, lined with a dull blue silk, turn down collar. Similar cut to no.16...….These two pieces 18.19 belonged to Sir Hy. Raeburn - 1756-1823. m.1775. Studied in Italy 85-87' Bought from Mrs Solomon for £7.0.0 together with the waistcoat (SNO.TC.1050)
