Summary
Court coat - Made of burgundy napped wool. Lined with cotton twill. Pockets linen. Linen canvas interlining. Lining held in with stitches of linen thread which show on the outside of the coat. Reinforcing strip across top of ventre. Front line curving well to the back; no front skirt. Deep stand collar. Pockets with curved opening and scalloped flaps. Narrow tapering back with high waist. Centre vent with deep tackover. Double folded side vents, joined to midway. Shaped, set-in sleeves with close round cuff. Inside pocket in lining (earliest seen in 1777. See Cunnington 'English Costume in the 18th century'). Embroidered with a naturalistic border design of flowers and grasses in mutlicoloured untwisted silk threads, chenille, metal threads, sequins and spangles. Some applied gauze. Large embroidered buttons. 8 centre front from neck to waist (2 missing). 3 on each cuff, 3 plus pocket, 2 hip buttons (1 missing). 2 buttonholes on chest (not original). Taken in at side seams. Extra tuck taken in side vents. Collar possibly altered, buttonholes possibly added. Lining may not be original. (male)
