Summary
Jacket - Begonia pink silk brocade with a bold design of architectural fragments and flowers in multi colour silk and silver thread. The fabric is possibly French silk 1736-1739 ?Ravel . Point rentre. The bodice is lined with pale blue silk. The sleeves are lined with unbleached linen. The cuff, bodice, front and skirt are interlined with coarse felted fabric. A close fitting bodice with two whalebones centre back and a short flared skirt with centre back vent. Box pleated side back and fan pleated at the sides. Two false pocket flaps. Set in sleeves with 3 darts at head, wide elbow length with large stiff winged cuffs. Trimmed with self covered domed buttons above the fan pleats. Three self covered buttons at lower centre front for laces to fasten over the stomacher. Possibly French or Italian. Cf Janet Arnold 'Patterns of Fashion' p. 26 (female)
