Summary
Dress; Open robe - Fine cotton woven with check. Block printed and pencilled. Block printed with trailing branches of flowers and surrounding twigs in madder reds and browns with blue pencilling and black outlines. Bodice and sleeves lined with fine bleached linen. Bodice closed front, high scoop neckline. No underarm seam. Curved shoulder-piece. Shaped back - 2 panels tapering to very low, squared-off point. Each seam whaleboned, including front edge. Each piece of bodice is mounted onto its lining before being made up. Sleeves - 3 tucks at head, straight and narrow, shaped to curve around elbow. Skirt 1 whole width and 2 panels. Deep knife pleats facing towards centre back, all round to side bodice. No trimmings. 9 worked eyelet holes each side of the centre front bodice. Cf Nancy Bradfield 'Costume in Detail' p.69-70.
