Summary
Dress; Open robe, Mantua - Deep blue watered silk damasked with design of garlands of flowers symmetrical around fold of fabric. Deep blue. The whole dress has been dyed. Bodice and sleeves lined with linen, skirt lined with fine silk. Bodice and skirt fronts cut in one length with folded robings all the way down, widening towards hem. Matching compere front, joined behind robings. Bodice back pleated, the pleats narrowing towards waist and hanging loose down skirt. Sleeves gathered at top, narrow, curved from elbow, flat straight. Skirt cut with bodice front and centre back. The rest cartridge-pleated to bodice (deep pleats at side) to lie smoothly at front and quite full at back. 2 pocket slits. 6 widths. Trimmings of self fabric box pleating on cuffs. Ruched gauze across neck a later addition. 11 silk death's head buttons and buttonholes on compere. Cuff trimming - alterations to give 1750s dress 1770s style. Line drawing with inventory card.
