Summary
Stomacher - Part of a sulphur yellow moire silk dress. Bodice and sleeves lined with unbleached linen. Skirt lined with ivory silk. Untrimmed. Bodice open front, short, pleated robings cut separately. Fitted back pleats stitched down, narrowing to waist, continuing into skirt. Sleeves top stitched over bodice, raw edge hidden beneath robings. Sleeves quite narrow, elbow length, 2 falling frills pinked. Double flounce of fine embroidered silk, flat net frill - machine embroidery on top of flounce. Skirt cut in one piece with bodice centre back, the rest pleated all round onto bodice. 2 pocket slits. Untrimmed. Evidence of pinning on front. The bodice lining has been altered. Stomacher made up from pieces of embroidered fabric (18th century) with a design of trailing stems and flowers worked in couched silver thread and coloured silks. Side panels added with red silk eyelets. Matching red silk embroidery added to centre panel. Stomacher possibly later and for fancy dress. cf Nancy Bradfield 'Costume in Detail' p. 31-32 Line drawing with inventory card. (female)
