Summary
Dress petticoat - Part of a sky blue ribbed silk dress (now faded), brocaded with silver thread dated about 1720. 545 mm (21.5 in) wide. Open design in silver brocading with trail of leaves and sprays of formalised flowers. Originally silver gilt (see also SNO.TC.308). Design of silk by Joseph Dandridge for James Leman (cf E.4505-1909 in V and A). bodicee and sleeves lined with linen. bodicee front has robings extending below waist. Opening 'V' shaped, coming close at waist. Narrow sleeves slightly pleated at head, elbow length. 2 (originally 3) fan-shaped flounces, tightly gathered. Skirt deeply pleated at side of waist and trained. 19th century lace now removed from flounces. All original trimming missing. Fastened with 6 round loops on each side of bodicee opening. Blue silk cord with brass tag tied to top loops. 19th century hooks and eyes now mostly missing. Pettitcoat made in matching fabric. Pleated evenly all round, except at centre front. Level hem. Very pieced. Altered from c. 1735 dress to c. 1750 - bodice front repleated to make them narrower. Front panels of skirt drawn back to increase pleating at side. First front seams altered from straight seams to slanted seams. Skirt back lengthened to form a train. Line drawing with inventory card. (female)
