Summary
Dress; Closed robe en foureau - Bunting yellow/cream silk damask 435 mm (17 in) wide. Lengthwise stripes of meandering lace design with fawn selvedge. Elaborate ground and zig zag pattern typical of 'half yard wide' silk, as only 16.5 in wide (cf. Garthwaite designs and silk in V and A collection). Bodice and sleeves lined with unbleached linen of various weights. Yellow woollen tabby hem facing. The dress is cut with the bodice en foureau. The centre-back continuing into skirt. Bodice front has robings and opening for stomacher. Apron front skirt. Narrow sleeves with winged cuffs (weighted with round lead weights). Untrimmed. The waist seam has been roughly re-sewn. Top of skirt very pieced. Bodice front also is pieced and shows signs of alteration. The robings have been cut off at waist. Cf. Nancy Bradfield 'Costume in Detail' pages 9-10.
