Summary
Circular sandalwood box with silver mounting, inscribed 'Sandlewood, from the Sandwich Islands per missionary ship 'John Williams'. CAPt. MORGAN, MAY. 1847'. Handwritten note in ink by Charles Wade inside stating 'THE JOHN WILLIAMS' The London Missionary Society and Melanesian Mission. Started in the Pacific in 1796. The first of a series of'John Williams' was bought in 1844 at cost of £6,237 which was raised by voluntary subscriptions from children. She was 103ft in length Barque rigged and specially built at Harwich - after 20 years of work was wrecked on Danger Island.
