Summary
Model of Dutch Boeier Yacht with leeboards, c.1800. Tub shaped hull painted green, with white strip and red detailing, Long bowsprit, two foresails and a mainsail. Leeboard each side. Cabin with skylight, two oars and an anchor on deck. two barrels, two buckets and two lanterns on stern. Two fenders hanging each side. Rudder has a carving of a man's head wearing a cap. Crocodile lower down. Long metal tiller. Banner on top of mast. Belonged for many years to the Harbour Master at Lowestoft. In notebook no.1, page 77 (1340945.1) Charles Wade refers to: 'Meridian 35. A Fine contemporary Model of a DUTCH YACHT of the 18th. Cent. showing all details & sails. Bluff ‘apple’ Bows, marked sheer, Lee Boards. Curved Roof to Cabin with skylight. Mast set in Tabernacle, with well to allow lowering it, very similar to the Norfolk wherries. Lanyard to dead eye of fore stay reeves through the head of the stem, oars quant sec. The carved head on the Rudder has a curious cap in the form of an animal. This model belonged to the Harbour Master at Lowestoft for many years.' Includes sketch with dimensions.
