Summary
Brass circumferentor. English, late 18th century. Compass in the centre of a brass ring, engraved with degrees around circumference. Four brass upstands with oblong holes, inner two of which rotate with the compass. Short hollow tube projects from underneath. Maker's name engraved - F.Combes fecit. Compass needle is missing. In notebook no.2, page ? (1340945.2) Charles Wade refers to: 'Admiral 148. Surveying instrument of brass. F.Combes fecit. The compass has the E and W transposed. Circumferentor or miner's dial'. Includes sketch with dimensions.
