Summary
Universal ring dial made of brass. Inscribed 'I COGGS FECIT'. Uncertain whether John Coggs Snr or J, Coggs Jnr. English c.1700. Well engraved dial. Outer ring marked 0 to 90 in each quadrant on one side, and 0 to 90 per half on other side, inner ring pivots to 90° relative to outer. Marked 1-12 in Roman numerals in each half on one side, and just patterned on the other. Central pillar, pivoted at each end, marked months on one side (Dec. twice) and zodiac symbols on the other and numbers. In notebook no.2, page ? (1340945.2) Charles Wade refers to: 'Admiral 139. Universal Sundial of Brass very well engraved good lettering. a fine example. I Coggs Fecit. T. Coggs was working in Fleet St. London. 1690 - 1700. A Ring dial by him is in the Sir John. R. Findlay collection and Analematic dial in the Evans Collection. Shows Time in any LATITUDE (Gillingham's Book).'
