Summary

Print; Aquatint etching - Aquatint, framed in dark wood, beaded frame and mounted with dark glass and gold surround, depicts the process of warping, dated 1791. In a timber framed attic, with a small window, there is a woman working a loom, and a man turning the handle of the driving machine of the warping mill. The threads are being wound onto two bobbins in a frame. In the background is a young boy in a blue coat operating a spinning wheel. A cat is on the sill of the window frame in the rear gable wall. Entitled as follows: 'To the RIGHT Honble the EARL of HERTFORD, VISCT., VISCOUNT BEAUCHAMP, LORD CONWAY, BARON of BAGLEY, and BARON of KILLALTAGH in IRELAND, and KNIGHT of the MOST NOBLE ORDER of the GARTER; this plate representing winding, warping with a new improved warping mill and weaving is most respectfully inscribed by his Lordship's most obedient humble servant Wm Hincks. London published as the Act directs by R. Pollard, Spitafields, June 20, 1791'. There is a crest in the middle of this text with the motto 'Fidere et Amore'. Below the picture to the left: 'Plate VII' and to the right: 'WM Hincks delin et sculp'. In bottom left corner: 1. winding 2. warping 3. the old frame 4. weaving Backed with brown paper, torn in several places. Holes left from old hangings, and corks stuck to bottom of back. Handwritten on a white sticker reverse 'HM1363'. There is a copy in the British Museum Prints and Drawings Department; museum number 1877,0113.376.
