Summary
Mask from Bali in carved wood, painted white all over with stylised black line decoration to the face, pierced female eyes, pointed nose, wide mouth, red lips and gold painted teeth. The whole crowned with band styled circlet of gold ground with red and blue decoration having centrepiece inset with circular mirror over black painted hair. Wooden piece inside mouth with two holes in. Red and white label inside: ‘No.U13282 f.3CPW'. In notebook no.4, page 46 (1340945.4) Charles Wade refers to: 'Seraphim 140. MASKS 23 specimens WAYANG WONG of carved wood, painted, used by actors dancing & singing the classic KAWI RAMAYANA episodes - also in the TOPENG, Local History Plays, BABAD mostly pantomime with dialogue by the comic actors.' Includes sketch of eyes.
