Summary
Vertical ladies spinning wheel with a double band driving system. European circa 1750 - 1850. Sycamore (possibly) and elm flyer. Dark stain. A vertical segmented form spinning wheel. The wheel features additional bone decor finials between the spokes on the inside of the rim, and also on the ends of the maidens and tension screw. The wheel appears to have been assembled onto the spoke ends compared to the traditional way which is to offer the hub and spokes sideways to the rim. Hence no spoke pegging is visible. Origin is quoted (below) as South Germany or Austria but further research is needed to verify, for example the table shape is very like that of a Scottish wheel. The table is an unusual triangular lobed form with ogee (club) foot legs of flat section which might be identifiable to a particular maker. Flyer looks like a replacement. Condition is fair, worm damage on most parts. Early NY ref SNO/DC/6. Information and digital image supplied by David and Valerie Bryant 2006. In notebook no.4, page 88 (1340945.4) Charles Wade refers to: 'Top Gallant no. 17. Bohemian Wheel of good workmanship and finish, wood of rich warm brown. Ivory finials & ornaments between the spokes' Includes sketch with dimensions.
Provenance
Given to the National Trust with Snowshill Manor in 1951 by Charles Paget Wade.
