Summary
Great wheel or wool wheel with batt head, handle and screw for tensioning. Hub and four spokes replaced 1980. Rim of wheel stabilised with fibreglass bandage. Great spindle wheel believed to be from Aberdovey in Wales circa 1700 - 1850. However, David Bryant writes: ' This wheel we recorded was from Aberdovey. However from more recent research we consider that the wheel originates from the USA not Wales. It has a bat head on the spinning mechanism, and I recently restored one for a customer in Ireland. We know Florence Feldman-Wood in the USA who runs a Spinning Wheel Sleuth newsletter and seen many great wheels similar in style to the one you have at Snowshill.' Oak table, elm legs. Batt head oak or ash. The rest probably oak apart from three softwood spokes. Dark stained. Wheel has been rebuilt. At the same time the spokes have been redistributed within the rim. Nail holes in the rim show previous positioning. The rim has been restored with a hessian wrap glued on to hold it firm. Woodworm has affected most parts of the wheel but otherwise it is in good condition. Early NT ref SNO/DC1. Peg missing at bottom of one wheel post. Extra information here supplied by David and Valerie Bryant.
