Summary
A black and gold lacquer shrine cabinet on ebonised low stand, Chinese, circa 1750. The exterior doors decorated with an extensive water landscape with hills, trees and buildings, the interior decorated with bamboo. Lock on doors. The stepped interior has thirteen drawers, balconies, columns and inner shutters opening to reveal a deity (1338048/SNO.SC.26), all with scenic and foliate decoration. Standing on a plinth, the top depicting bamboo plants. In notebook no.3, page 8 (1340945.3) Charles Wade refers to: '33 B. Small Chinese Cabinet on stand with cabriole legs. Cabinet has ogee pediment & two doors. Interior shrine with gold columns & grille. A Japanese figure of Buddha. 5 drawers. Black & gold lacquer. Cabinet 2’5” x ?? 8½” width'. Mr Wade has inserted an additional piece of paper into the notebook with an annotated plan of the cabinet. 'CHINESE CABINET. No.33 B. 1. COURT OF THE ALMOND BLOSSOM 2.
