Caption
With her unblinking stare, this oil portrait of Maria Timmis was the cause of a few childhood nightmares. Hanging at the top of the stairs, grandchildren visiting Sunnycroft would have to dash past her to their bedrooms in the dark; it’s no wonder she has earned the nickname ‘Scary Mary’.
