Summary
Oil painting on canvas, James Henry Legge Dutton, 3rd Baron Sherborne (1804 -1883) by Edwin Williams (fl. 1843 - London 1875), initialled EW 18.., 1868/69. The Cheltenham Chronicle, 15 December 1868 announced the commission of the portrait. A full-length portrait standing a room with green drapery on the right and a masonic lectern on the left. The regalia is that of the Provincial Grand Master for the Province of Gloucestershire this is shown by star in the centre of the square and compass and the name of the province on the outside. He was PGM in 1856. On his breast he is wearing a Masonic Jewel this is related to the Holy Royal Arch or Chapter degree in freemasonry it is specifically a First Principles Jewel, which is the equivilent of the Master in a Craft Lodge. The only Chapter of which he was ever first principle was the Chapter of Unanimity No 82 and this year was 1860. As he was Third Grand Principle in 1863 which is a Grand Rank apponitment if the painting had been done after 1863 I would have thought he would have worn that jewel in preference to the first principles jewel. He was was Intiated into Freemasonry into the Cotteswold Lodge by Brother George Newmarch who was the leading light in the revival of the Provincial Grand Lodge at that time. Brother Dutton was installed as Worshipful Master of the Cotteswold Lodge in December 1855. From archives of the oldest Lodges in the County it seems this was done a quick pace because the prominent freemasons in the county at that time wanted JHL as Provincial Grand Master. He was appointed as Prov GM on the 25th April 1856 by the Earl of Zetland who was then the MW Grand Master of England. His Patent (the Warrant giving him the power of PGM) was issued on the 10th July 1856. The Installation took place at Foundation's Hall in Cheltenham on the 23rd October 1856, he was installed by the RW Brother WF Beadon who was a Past Grand Junior Warden of England having held that post in 1849.
