Summary
Print, etching on paper, Lusores / Schola Italica Picturae (Players/Gamblers), (after Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio) by Giovanni Volpato (Angarano 1740 - Rome 1803). Inscribed at bottom: Michelangelo da Caravaggio pinxit Johannes Volpato sculpsit Romae 1772 followed by title and verse: E tabula in aedibus Barberinis Romae asservata. Probably bought by Parminter's on Grand Tour. After Caravaggio's The Cardsharps, once in Palazzo Babarini, now in Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth. On the left, a naive young man stares at his hand of cards; a man glances at the young man's cards and gestures towards the other player, a cardsharp, who reaches behind his back and grasps some cards he was hiding in his belt.
