One of two sketches of the painting commissioned by Wilbraham Egerton, 2nd Baron and 1st Earl Egerton of Tatton (1832 - 1909) for £600 bought by Maurice Egerton, 4th Baron Egerton of Tatton (1874 - 1958), after Leader's widow's sale, Christie's 8 April 1927, lots 59 (bought Sampson for 17gns) and 51 (bought in at 22 gns); by whom bequeathed to the National Trust with the house, gardens and contents of Tatton Park
