Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Woman selling Fruit, Italian (North Italian) School, circa 1600. Full-length portrait of a woman, seated with a basket of fruit beside her and holding up a basket of figs, a fan propped beside her; she wears a red and white striped bodice and white collar and shirt. What looks like a fan decorated with scene of priest praying at altar; another figure behind with gun raised about to shoot him – a depiction of the martyrdom of Dominican S. Luigi Beltrano/ St Louis Bertrand = San Luis Beltrań (Valencia 1526- 1581;canonised by Pope Clement X in 1671) – is really a little processional banner for a pilgrimage.

Bequeathed by Maurice Egerton, 4th Baron Egerton of Tatton (1874 - 1958) to the National Trust with the house, gardens and contents of Tatton Park
