Caption
The Coligny brothers were French Protestant leaders and were key figures in the French Wars of Religion (1562-1598). Gaspar (1516-72), the central figure in this portrait, served as Admiral of France and was killed in the massacre of St Bartholomew. Another version of this portrait is in the Mauritshuis (The Hague, Netherlands). Both this version and the present picture are believed to derive from an engraving by Marc Duval (c.1545-1581), a drawing for which is in the Bibliothèque Nationale (Paris, France).
