Summary

Pencil on paper, "Tasset Tampul", a Lama or Tibetan monk by William Simpson (Glasgow 1823 – Willesden 1899). Head and shoulders of 'Tasset Tampul', a Lama or Tibetan monk. Displayed in a glazed wooden frame.

Marks and inscriptions

On collar of subject: Signature - Wm Simpson Underneath subject: Tibetan characters with a note at the side saying 'Lama's name written by himself in the Tibetan character'. Beneath this further handwritten notes saying 'Taseet Tampul A Lama monk from Himie, Ladak, Jummoo, 21st Jan 1876' Back, on paper tape at the top: Handwritten in pencil 'The Earl Egerton of Tatton' Back, near the bottom of the board.: Two printed labels, one atop the other. The lower one says 'From the Fine Art Gallery, 20, Cockspur Sreet, Trafalgar Square, London SW' the lower part of this label has been obscured by the removal of old tape. The second label is on the upper edge of the first and says '67. Tasset Tampul......He was the chief Lama amongst these monks. He has written his name in the Tibetan character upon the sketch'.
