Full description
The pot-pourri vase was evidently in the Egerton collection as early as 1870, when it was recorded by Lady Charlotte Schreiber in one of her notebooks, which was presented to Sir A. W. Franks in 1890, and is now in the archives of the British Museum. The entry reads as follows: "Lord Egerton of Tatton has at Tatton, near Knutsford, a Magnificent Vase = Chelsea - most delicate maroon ground - scroll handles - & cover richly gilt - quite intact, Height 23 Inches - On one side is a subject à la Teniers, Horsemen at an Inn door, with Sign of the Horns - groupe of Women and children in the foreground - on the other side, a seated figure before which is an altar, a priest about to sacrifice - a garlanded ox on one side and groupe of warriors around the altar - CS, 9 Sept. 1870."
