Summary
Portrait miniature Josiah Spode the elder (Stoke on Trent 1733-1797) by Nathaniel Freese (fl.1794-1814). Wearing brown coat, yellow waistcoat, white chemis, stock and tied cravat. Oval watercolour on ivory, gilt-mounted in a rectangular papier-mâché frame, the reverse inscribed 'The Portrait of the late Josiah Spode of Stoke upon Trent / who died 18 August 1797 aged 64 / the Great-grandfather of the present Josiah Spode of the Mount / 1832'. Purchased by the National Trust from William Copeland via Bonhams at 'The Contents of Trelissick House including The Copeland China Collection' sale, Feock, near Truro, Cornwall, 23-24th July 2013, lot 430. Previously, Hawksyard Priory, purchased on 24th February 1925 for £25.
