Summary
A walnut footstool on scroll legs, the front pair lower than the rear legs. Associated with a set of three armchairs (NT 129427, 129515 and 129533), another four other footstools (NT 129426.1-4) and a squab frame (NT 129461) dispersed throughout the house. This footstool is upholstered in green silk and metal thread damask with flowers and spots, with silver tassel fringe, to match a daybed in the King’s Closet and chair in the Cartoon gallery (NT 129532 and the above listed NT 129533). This is one of the many pieces of furniture acquired as a perquisite by the 6th Earl of Dorset in his capacity of Lord Chamberlain to King William III.
Provenance
A perquisite of office acquired by Charles Sackville, 6th Earl of Dorset in his capacity of Lord Chamberlain to William III. Knole and the majority of its furniture were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust in 1946.
