Summary
A carved and ebonised walnut elbow chair, the stuffed seat, back and arms of which are covered in extremely rich old green and crimson genoa velvet loose covers, with tassel fringe and a loose cushion. The carved scroll legs and front stretcher centre in stylised flowers. The velvet is en suite with the bed of James II and Mary of Modena at Kensington Palace, which may suggest that this chair is yet another perquisite acquired by the 6th Earl of Dorset in his capacity of Lord Chamberlain.
Provenance
Possibly acquired either as a perquisite of office or as a gift by Charles Sackville, 6th Earl of Dorset in his capacity of Lord Chamberlain. Knole and the majority of its furniture were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust in 1946.
