Summary
This rare, finely carved and gilt day bed with pierced headpiece was made in Paris around 1680. The elaborate carvings of scrolls and foliage features very distinct eagle’s head terminals, lending the piece an imperial quality. The eight richly carved legs, paired at the centre, end in paw feet. The loose squab and bolster are upholstered in crimson stamped wool caffoy, possibly of later date. Parts of the original apron are now attached to the back of the piece.
Provenance
Knole and the majority of its furniture were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust in 1946.
