Summary
One of a pair of English Rococo console tables of carved and gilt pine. The specimen marble tops are inlaid with a variety of coloured marbles in squares and could have been imported to England either by the second or third Duke of Dorset, who both went on a Grand Tour to Italy. The second Duke embarked on two tours, one in 1731-3 and another in 1736-8. The third Duke left England in 1770, travelling to Rome, Naples, Florence and Venice.
Provenance
Knole and the majority of its furniture were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust in 1946.
