Summary
One of a set of six armchairs, English, c.1695, in softwood, part ebonised, part silvered. The very elaborate high backs are surmounted by scrolls and filled in by three columns of double scrolls set back to back. The turned legs and arm supports with carved knobs and burr feet, and the stretchers carved in quadrants. The seats of with loose cushions have covers made from fragments of Flemish tapestries.
Provenance
Knole and the majority of its furniture were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust in 1946.
