Summary
One of a set of six carved walnut stools, with stuffed seats, covered in crimson silver damask. The pierced stretchers are particularly well carved with flowers and foliage and centring in a basket and paw foot. The stools, which are of about 1670, came from Whitehall Palace and are part of a larger set also comprising two walnut armchairs equally upholstered in crimson (NT 129454.1-2). Two of the stools bear a crown and the initials ‘WP’ stamped on the webbing under the seats.
Provenance
Acquired either as a perquisite of office or as a gift by Charles Sackville, 6th Earl of Dorset in his capacity of Lord Chamberlain. Knole and the majority of its furniture were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust in 1946.
