Summary
Tapestry, wool and silk, 4 warps per cm, Verdure, one of four, Flemish, c. 1650-1675. A dense wooded landscape with a curved tree at the left and a narrow pointed tower in the distance. There are wide borders at either side composed of vases and urns of flowers in a decorative architectural framework. The right hand border has been sewn onto the main field, but the left hand border is integral.
Full description
The tapestry is one of four related verdures at Wightwick, all of which have been cut up and reassembled to fill parts of the walls on the ground floor of the house (nos. 1289256.2-4). A fifth tapestry, no. 1289256.1, is not related to the others but was made slightly later and has a different border. (Helen Wyld, 2013)
