Summary
Tapestry, wool and silk, 4 warps per cm, Verdure, one of four, Flemish, c. 1650-1675. A narrow vertical strip of landscape between two wide borders. The landscape consists of three tall trees on the left with a view to a distant valley and a church in the centre. The borders are composed of vases and urns of flowers in a decorative architectural framework. Both borders have been sewn onto the main field, but all three pieces probably come from the same tapestry set.
Full description
The tapestry is one of four related verdures at Wightwick, all of which have been cut up and reassembled to fill parts of the walls on the ground floor of the house (nos. 1289256.2-4). A fifth tapestry, no. 1289256.1, is not related to the others but was made slightly later and has a different border. (Helen Wyld, 2013)
