Summary
Eight day English longcase clock in oak case, by John Stevens, Stafford c.1770/1850 Two train, four pillar movement with anchor escapement and rack hour striking on bell. Cast iron weights. 11” square brass dial (with cut-outs behind chapter ring) with asymmetrical scrolling brass spandrels. Silvered brass chapter ring with roman numerals and arabic five minute figures , quarter hour circle and half-hour marks. Silvered brass name plate engraved: “Jno Stevens / Stafford” and semi-circular calendar aperture within engraved and matted dial centre. Pierced blued-steel hands. Oak case with low, caddy-top hood having turned wooden columns to sides, plain rectangular trunk door with brass escutcheon, and plain square base with four simple bracket feet below. Note: It would appear that the dial and case belong to the original clock by Stevens, which was probably of 30 hour duration, and which probably had the present eight-day movement fitted to it about 1850, when the dial was pierced for winding squares.
