Summary
A mahogany bureau-bookcase, British, late 18th century, with moulded cornice above a pair of astragal glazed doors, enclosing three adjustable shelves, the sloped front with ivory diamond-shaped inset keyhole escutcheon, the fall supported on two pull-out with small brass handles when down, the interior fitted an arrangement of drawers and pigeon holes, above four cockbeaded and graduated drawers, each drawer inset with ivory diamond-form keyhole escutcheon and two pierced and shaped backplates and bail handles, on shaped bracket feet.
Provenance
In 1937 Sir Geoffrey Mander and his wife Rosalie gifted Wightwick Manor, its contents and gardens to the National Trust. Sir Geoffrey and his family continued to occupy and manage Wightwick adding to the collection in collaboration with the National Trust. Sir Geoffrey died in 1962 but Lady Mander continued to live at Wightwick until her death in 1988. This bureau bookcase is listed in the Wightwick Manor 1937 inventory.
