Summary
A fruitwood burgomaster or round chair, probably Sri Lankan, first half 18th century, the circular caned seat with pierced semi-circular backrest, with three oval caned panels separated by four block-section and turned uprights, the two outer ones with turned knob finials, on six block-section and turned legs joined by a line-incised circular stretcher and three intersecting block-section and turned stretchers.
Provenance
In 1937 Sir Geoffrey Mander and his wife Rosalie gifted Wightwick Manor, its contents and gardens to the National Trust. Sir Geoffrey and his family continued to occupy and manage Wightwick adding to the collection in collaboration with the National Trust. Sir Geoffrey died in 1962 but Lady Mander continued to live at Wightwick until her death in 1988. This chair is listed in the Wightwick Manor 1937 inventory.
