Summary
A mahogany and marquetry tea table, Dutch, circa 1730-1750. The rectangular tray top with re-entrant corners, the tray surface with marquetry of a double-handled urn filled with a display of leaves and flowers, large scrolled acanthus leaves around the base and sides of the urn, all enclosed in a line-inlaid border and a further chequered border, above a frieze drawer to each short side, the drawer fronts with marquetry inlay ensuite with the tray, a pierced and shaped brass back plate and bail handle, the long sides with small shaped apron, each with marquetry inlay of flowers, scrolled acanthus and other leaves all within a line-inlaid border, the legs with lappets, knees and the length of the leg with floral marquetry, terminating in pad feet.
Provenance
In 1937 Sir Geoffrey Mander and his wife Rosalie gifted Wightwick Manor, its contents and gardens to the National Trust. Sir Geoffrey and his family continued to occupy and manage Wightwick adding to the collection in collaboration with the National Trust. Sir Geoffrey died in 1962 but Lady Mander continued to live at Wightwick until her death in 1988. This tea table is listed in the Wightwick Manor 1937 inventory.
