Summary
Pencil drawing of head and shoulders of young woman, likely Emma Madox Brown. Full face, eyes facing, lips together and head slightly tilted to the model's left. The hair is plaited around the head and shoulders covered in a shawl. Dated April 5 -53. Pencil on grey paper, adhered to white backing paper, large cream card mount. Emma Hill, daughter of a farmer, was the second wife of Ford Madox Brown. Her extreme youth and want persuaded him to keep his marriage a secret for several years.
Provenance
Lady Mander. Possibly acquired as part of an assorted lot of drawings by Elizabeth 'Lizzie' Siddal and D.G. Rossetti, purchased in 1962, partially split with Mr Jeremey Maas. Cost £120.
