Summary
Pencil drawing on paper, Madeleine, a Child Reading by John Hungerford Pollen (London 1820 - London 1902), signed with initials and dated "March 21 1858".inscribed "Madeleine 39 Pembridge Villas March 21 1858 JH". A head-and-shoulders portrait of a small girl, seated to left at a table, her head supported on her right hand (the paper mounted on second sheet on which is written J H Pollen). This portrait drawing was thus done at the period of Pollen's close involvement with the Rossetti circle. Madeleine was his wife Anne's sister-in-law. She became a nun.
