Summary
Pencil drawing on paper, A Sheet of Sketches: Sketches of a coach, back view of a coachman, a violinist, two dancers and a grotesque head by Sir John Everett Millais RA (Southampton 1829- London 1896), signed and dated "J.E. Millais 1846". A sheet of pencil sketches including two dancers; a violinist; grotesque head; back view of a coachman and a coach. From Millais' student days at the Royal Academy Schools, before the formation of the Brotherhood and the Pre-Raphaelite "style". Millais frequently made sketches of everyday life and sights, including many party scenes of dancers and musicians. The caricature style and rapid scribbled draughtsmanship of this sheet is typical of these. They reflect the influence of contemporary illustrations, notably those of Dickens by 'Phiz' (Hablot Knight Browne) and John Leech's scenes of middle-class life for Punch.
