Among the children are two boys in a lion costume performing the traditional lion dance (Wushi), held on New Year’s Day and at Spring festivals, accompanied by drummers and dancers. The dance was said to have been used by Han militants to raise money and exchange information, hidden in lettuce leaves fed to the lion, in order to defeat the Manchus under the guise of a celebration at the fall of the Ming dynasty.
