Summary
Cast from a Coade stone roundel depicting Winter, it shows a seated putto facing to the right, tying a pair of ice skates to his feet. The goat in low relief in the background, represents the zodiac symbol of Capricorn (December-January). This roundel forms part of a group of four reliefs depicting the seasons (see NT. 128692, 128700, 128704) originally designed c.1770-1790 for Eleanor Coade (1733-1821) to be reproduced in Coade stone, possibly by John Bacon (1740-1799). The Knole roundels all have an additional decorative foliate border around the top. This plaster cast is likely to have been made in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century.
