Caption
The sitter was first son of Sir Jacob Astley, 6th Bt., 16th Baron Hastings (1797 – 1859) and Georgiana Dashwood (1796 – 1835). On his death, he was succeeded by his younger brother, Delaval Loftus (1825 – 1872). He married Frances Cosham in 1860, but they had no children. He gained the rank of officer in 1848 in the service of the 2nd Life Guards, and the rank of Honorary Colonel in the service of the Norfolk militia. He died aged 48.

Full description
First son of Sir Jacob Astley, 6th Bt., 16th Baron Hastings (1797 – 1859) and Georgiana Dashwood (1796 – 1835). On his death, he was succeeded by his younger brother, Delaval Loftus (1825 – 1872). He married Frances Cosham, daughter of T. Cosham on 19th May 1860. She bore him no issue. He gained the rank of officer in 1848 in the service of the 2nd Life Guards, and the rank of Honorary Colonel in the service of the Norfolk militia. Provenance
accepted in lieu of tax by H.M. Treasury and transferred to the National Trust in 2009.
