The sitter was the son of Delaval Loftus, 18th Baron Hastings (1825 – 1872) and Frances Manners-Sutton (1829 – 1874), he inherited Seaton Delaval from his brother, Bernard, 19th Baron (1855 – 1875). He was a successful racehorse owner and breeder and all-round sportsman, enjoying hunting, yachting, cricket and shooting. In 1880, he married the Hon. Elizabeth Harbord (1860 – 1957), daughter of Charles Harbord, 5th Baron Suffield and Cecilia Annetta Baring. They had six children, the eldest, Lt. Col.
