Summary
A gilt wood demi-lune pier table, English, circa 1780, with a moulded veined brown and white marble top, above a fluted frieze on fluted tapering legs headed with leaf-carved capitals and similar feet, the marble with an 'Army & Navy' paper label, brass plaque DAWES & SONS, ANTIQUE DEALERS, CHELSEA and label 'Lord Hastings 5541'.
Provenance
It is likely that this table formed part of a group of furniture commissioned by Sir John Hussey-Delaval (1728-1808) for his residence on Hanover Square which was remodelled by Robert Adam between 1781 and 1783 or for Millburn, his villa at Claremont, which was also remodelled by Adam between 1787 and 1790.
